Occasionally she suffers from stinky butt. Am I stuck bathing her for the rest of her life?

I agree if the cat is overweight it will have a hard time grooming itself. But it really is not normal for your cat to not clean itself. Cats are notorious self cleaners and hate being dirty. If your cat has a sore mouth bad teeth ulcers of the mouth root accesses etc, can all be reasons why your cat is not cleaning itself.

You really shouldn't bath your cat as it strips the skin of its natural oils and you may find your cats skin starts to flake.

You do however need the animal checked to be sure there is nothing going on.

Is she overweight? Is her stool loose? Does she have long bloomers?

If you answer yes to the first two, I can link you to some excellent info on cat nutrition. Email me if interested, or hunt me down or something.

If she is long-haired, you can always get her a "brazilian" at the groomers, or just keep the area trimmed.

I had the same problem with a fat cat who couldn't reach her butt who also had loose stools due to an inferior diet. I bought pet wipes and got into a weekly habit of giving her a butt wash. What fun!

She's now losing weight and her poo is firm because I changed her to a good quality canned food.

And she gets the occasion "brazilian" with betweentimes trims.

Is your cat overweight or obese? Cats that are too fat cannot reach their butt to clean it. Or is your cat longhaired? Such cats often get poop stuck in the fur around their butt. Trimming the fur behind the hind legs and around the butt often helps.
You don't have to bathe your cat competely. You just need to wipe his butt with a moist tissue paper or a baby wipe each time he does #2. That's what I do with my cats.

Get it some cat cleaning whipes. You can get them at Pet's Mart or Fred Meyer's but after a few times of you scrubbing him with it, he will learn to keep himself clean

I agree something is wrong with your cat because it is a trait of a cat to clean themselves. have a vet check the cat out.

I have one cat like this:
- yes, he is a bit chubby....(but props himself against a wall to clean his bum - thank god)...so it isn't that he can't reach
- yes, he eats a really good (and expensive!) diet ...so it isn't his stool
- yes, he is long hair....but he gets combed (and coincidently doesn't like that either)

....he just doesn't groom anything!

our conclusion: HE IS LAZY!!!
(likely your cat is too)

my trick - take a damp towel and rub it all over your cat...she will be forced to clean after that!

I would think it must be something medical if your cat won't clean herself. My cat cleans all day practically.

I think I would take my kitty to the vet on this one, just to rule out anything weird.

Is she a fat kitty? Maybe she can't reach herself and needs to go on a diet.
