diet and excercise.

you need to eat properly and then develop a good excercise program.

I would suggest you study nutrition books and change the way you eat.

A diet is not something you go on for a period of time, you need to make a life-change.

Look into nutrition books and circuit training for weights. for cardio you should be doing high intensity interval training.

Avoiding products with trans fats and High Fructose Corn Syrup is a good start until you bone up on nutrition.

If you develop what works for you by eating healthy, you are more likely to stay on it, and you won't fall prey to a "canned" diet that will show short term gains, but cause serious health problems in the long run (like the atkins diet).

you CANNOT spot reduce meaning you cannot just target your love handles.

EDIT: actually cardio is not the most effective way, what you eat is. Abs are made in the kitchen not the gym. It takes far far more time to burn off excess calories than it does to simply eat right in the first place.

If you only watch what you eat and do no excercise, you will lose weight, if you don't watch what you eat and excercise like crazy you will get fat.

Cardio is good- no question, but it only burns calories while you are doing it. When you lift, you not only build more muscle, which in turn burns more calories as it spends more energy raising your basal or resting metabolism, but lifting creates a sensation known as the afterburn where you continue to burn calories even after you finish up to two days after.

You need cardio for health too. Thats why circuits and HIIT training is the best- they are hybrids of both.

Billy Blank (Tae Bo) does one that is great for trimming that waist. Balance on your left foot. Raise the right knee and bring your right elbow down to touch it. That motion crunches in on your side. If you have trouble balancing, hold on to a chair with your free hand. Make sure you bend to the side, not forward. Do the reps rapidly, do 3 sets of 8 to begin. Then switch sides. When I do them my sides really start showing definition. Better yet, get a Tae Bo DVD. Start with a basic one. You will be amazed how quick you will shape up!!

Cardio is the most affective way to decrease body fat. You can do all sorts of resistance exercises sit-ups etc., but it may or may not specifically target an area. Resistance will increase metabolism and will help in the fight against body fat, but cardio exercises such as running, walking, biking etc will be the most beneficial.

crunches, in every possible way you can think. im going through the exact same thing. running is really good too. it helps burn the fat. but the crunches defines the muscles. and honestly im super lazy. and my getting really good results. but u have to do it until ur super sore. the more sore u get the faster u'll get ur results is how i see it.
