I want to go from black to blonde, got no money to go to a salon... so this was my plan;
I'm thinking bleaching my hair. I know it will go a horrible orangy/yellow colour.
Wait 1 week, wearing a hat all week of course.
Bleach it again, Then leave it a week.
By the Garneir (sp) live platnium blonde. & in between each week condition like crazy!

what you's all think? Better than doing it 3 times in a space of a week?

I think everyone here is full of crap to begin with.

By going to a Salon, it does NOT mean you will get a perfect job or that you will damage your hair any less. No matter what, your hair will be in horrible condition.

If your hair is recently dyed black, do not do it yet. If you've had it dyed black for awhile and it's slowly starting to fade to a copperish red, you can attempt it. It will take longer than what you may think.

Bleaching

To get started you will need:

Desired Bleach and Developer (more for longer hair!)
Plastic bowl for mixing
Plastic measuring cups
Toner with bottle applicator
Tint brush
Vaseline or barrier cream
Plastic rattail combs
Plastic or rubber gloves
Cotton strips
Timer
Large tooth comb
Clips to section hair
A mirror
A FRIEND!
Plastic drape to cover your clothing. A regular garbage bag with a hole cut out of the top and the sides split will do in a pinch. I have an old shirt I use for my coloring and bleaching, but you do want to cover your neck some.

Part your hair in four sections from front to back (down the center) and then again, from ear to ear. Clip up all of your hair with PLASTIC clips. Never metal. Make sure any metal jewelry is either removed completely or covered well with tape. This is where I say call in that favor your good friend owes you. Buddy up with friends and have bleaching parties, so that everyone can help each other out. Remember, we're all here for the same reasons! Let's help each other look good!

With a friends help, take small partings horizontally and starting at the base of the parts, apply a thin coat of vaseline/barrier cream l to your scalp, your ears, around your ears, center and side part, forehead, hairline, etc, reclipping each section back to it's original position. This is IMPORTANT for the non pros here since you have no way of really judging where the bleach is actually going.
Bleach will literally eat away your hair follicles from chemical burns!!! Once these are damaged, they will not grow again usually!

Please do NOT just lob a huge pile of bleach on your multi level (meaning hair that's been dyed and/or bleached different tones and has outgrowth and therefore uneven in color) hair and think you're the bomb. Unless of course you want to look like **** and go bald. I cannot stress this enough to this group. I simply CANNOT seem to get it through certain people's heads here that while this might work once...or hey, it even sort of work 5 times or even 10, one day and (it WILL happen), your hair will say "**** you!" and break off badly and fall out.
Remember this aliteration: Constant chemical contact can cause critically caustic catastrophies!

Measure and mix your bleaching formula, which is usually 2 oz (60 ml> cream lightener to 4 oz <120 ml> developer OR 1/2 powder bleach to 1/2 or 1 part developer.

Once that's done, start working on the back of the head first. Work one section at a time and work quickly. Take 1/8th inch (.35 cm> horizontal partings at the bottom of each section and brush the bleach on.
(If you've got out growth, do that only, following the same directions but with only a root application)

Steadily work your way upward that entire section, making sure each part that you're bleaching is straight, layering each parting on top of each other. After each part, put a small length of cotton wadding against your scalp, between each parting, to protect your scalp. If you're just doing a root application, use them for this as well, as it helps prevent seepage and overlapping bleach on already bleached hair which can cause your hair to snap off where the bleached parts overlap.

Do each section, taking great care to keep bleach off scalp. Set your timer at 10 minute intervals and keep a close eye on it.

A Speed up Tip:
To help boost bleaching all over, toss a plastic bag on your head and hit it with your hair dryer.
No. Not literally.
Check constantly. It can make a drastic change very quickly this way and I suggest it only to the more advanced bleachers who can follow directions well in this community.

If the hair bleach dries out, spritz it with water to keep it activated.
Wipe off strands in different areas to check for lift. If it isn't light enough, tuck it back in and make sure it's got bleach on it.

Once you've got the desired color (usually looking for a lemon yellow or what we call a level 10 hair lift and this stage, depending on your hair and dye thats already in it can take up to an hour), rinse your hair under warm water and shampoo twice, making sure you get all the hair in the back around the nape and ears. Have someone check your scalp for any irritation. This is important!

Gently towel dry.

This is where you'd put on a toner if your color result wasn't what you wanted. Otherwise, follow straight through with your semi permanent color of choice (MP, SFX, etc).
Toner has to be used with a 20V developer for it to actually work. Toning goes FAST (Why we call it flash toning). So watch your hair, or you'll end up blotchy pastel colored locks or having brassy hair in some sections and nicely toned hair in others. Either way, you'll look mottled.

Clip up the hair into four sections. Mix the toner, and apply to 1/4 partings with a bottle (much faster than bowl and brush technique. Bottles do NOT work for bleaching.), starting at the base and working to the ends. Set your timer 10 minute increments. Most flash toning only needs about 10 minutes or even less to show results so WORK FAST because you just have no way of knowing how fast your hair is going to tone!
Cover the hair with toner, taking particular care around the face and top of head and hair underneath. This is another time it's good to have a friend. Wipe a few strands off...if its the effect you want, rinse, shampooo, condition. I strongly recommend professional deep conditioners, but once again, I know they're expensive. Use what is available and hot oil treatments are good, too.

As everyone has said, bleaching it yourself is a BAD idea. I have naturally dark blonde hair and have gotten highlights over the years... even though I don't get them done but every few months, the damage is still evident. Any lightening of the hair using bleach is harmful to your hair. Try just highlighting it with a cute red or copper color... going from black to blonde is going to kill your hair whether you do it yourself or go to a salon. Either way, your hair will likely need to be stripped... not a good idea.

Okay First you'll need to condition it a bunch before you do it... Bleach it then put a toner on it (like a semi permant dye) So the shade isnt a horrible orange color, and you can be seen out in public with it, without being made fun haha... then after that you should condition a bunch.. go to a Sallys Beauty store to get your stuff... Bleach from walmart is a no no. And you should have a friend or family member help you cover all your hair.. You dont want black splotches everwhere. Its also very risky tooo

I have really dark drown hair, and I personally wouldn't suggest going blonde at all. If you want a change of look, I would recommend getting some brown highlights in your hair. Going form black to blonde is a really drastic change, and you probably wont be happy with it when it starts to grow out. Before trying to go completely blonde, try the brown highlights, and see if that satisfies your look.

I think you should go to a salon no matter the cost since you can damage your hair for a longer period of time then you would have to walk around looking weird....so save your money and go to the salon...

You're going to end up killing your hair!

Wait until you have enough cash to go to the salon. They can do it CORRECTLY and give you a result that will leave you with healthier hair than your idea.

If you can afford the bleaching process and buying hair dye, then you can afford to go to a beauty school and let them do it for you.

DON'T
Right now brown hair and dark hair is so hot and in. My guy luvs my hair!
Cameron Diaz and other celebrities are dying their hair darker.
If you really want blonde hair, and don't got no money, bleach it if you look ok in blonde, if you have darker eyebrows and stuff and look bad, trust me everyone will talk rumors about you!

Don't do it! Please! My friend did exactly what you descibed once at the age of 14 and her hair came out HORRIBLE! Her hair looked all crappy and classmates laughed at her! I felt so bad for her then because her rep. had lowered for ruining her gorgeous hair! So she finally decided to dye her hair back. And now her hair was so much better.

I think you torturing you hair unnecessarily. That just can't be good for it. Besides very seldom does a person look better than with their natural color.
