I guess that Cristal would be the better of the two. But, neither would be my first choice. Cristal is about triple the price that it's worth and Dom continually gets low marks in side by side tastings.

If you are going for quality, I'd do a nice J Schram or Schramsberg Reserve. Great quality, MUCH less expensive. If you want French, I'd do a vintage Moet (NOT WHITE STAR) or Veuve Cliquot, preferably Rose'.

The highest rated champagnes released lately, according to conniseurs and critical publications, are by Krug, Charles Heidsieck, Pol Roger and Bollinger. Neither Cristal or Dom shows up in the top ten lately.
Myself I am happy with Veuve.
Rappers seem to like Cristal over Dom.
I would go with the experts that value taste of the champagne over the price and cache of the label. Save your money and savour the wine.
Krug is the choice for those that know and appreciate champagne. 1996 Dom is good, Veuve La Grande Dame is also excellent.
If you must go with hip-hop sensibility, it can be noted that the maker of Cristal, the Louis Roederer people, annouced they did not want anything to do with black-american culture....so Jay-Z switched to the side with taste and went with top rated Krug.
Nuff said.

If you are going to spend for some costly bubbles, try Krug. I personally think both Cristal & Dom are over rated or over valued.
