Is this a common problem with Jeeps, and can it be corrected with schims in the leafs or what?

Simple....spring fatigue. My YJ is 3/4 higher on onside.
Solution.....new springs....no shims. If you don't want a lift you could find a spring shop and have them re-arched, but this is just a temp solution.

Go to the link below and check out their spring options.

Leaf springs will sag after a while and that is probally your problem. The Jeep is 23 years old and has most likely had some abuse over that time and most of the weight has always been on the drivers side. It's probally time for new springs and a fairly inexpensive place for factory replacements is JC Whitney, or Quadratec. Most aftermarket companys ( Skyjacker, Superlift, Rancho ) also have factory springs but they will be a little more expensive. Just look for ones that have 0" lift and that should be factory ride height. I hope this will help!

Wow I have an 84 cj7 too. What a coincidence mine was a little low on the driver side. I went to 4wd hardware.com and a got a new set of springs with 2.5 inches of lift. My jeep don't sag and I have a nice set of 31's on her. A huge help for me. Good luck and I hope this helps.

More than often this is caused by a weak coil or semi-eleptic (leaf Spring) at the rear of the vehicle. This can be caused by excessive wait constantly and or at one time too much weight on that side of the vehicle.

sometimes a cracked leaf spring is not apparent until you take it apart , as well a coil spring will simply collapse , I've had to replace rear springs on a couple of my Jeeps , these things get loaded up and rode hard , probably time for new springs , try jc Whitney .

Maybe you punched your chassis mounts through the floor.
