I have light sage walls with white trim. My couch is a light tan color and i have a chair that is dark sage. So my question was, what color of curtains should i use?

Espresso or kahki would be very pretty. You could also play off a main color in an adjoining room to tie the two rooms together visually. With curtains invariably I find I need to bring home 5 or 6 pair before I get it right. What looks good in the store looks quite different at home. You might want to buy a number of (single) panels at once and so you can compare side-side and see what looks good in the space. Not to be a snob but usually I would not think to purchase window treatments from Walmart... HOWEVER I was there looking for simple white curtains for my daughter's room and they have actually have a huge selection and many more upscale looking items.. I was especially impressed with their velvet drapes. The Lichen (green) would look great. I ended up purchasing stone colored raw silk panels for $17/ea on clearance for my bedroom. I had actually given up on my bedroom drapes and settled for some that were ok.. but I didn't love.
Last thought - I saw some beautiful flowing linen looking drapes at sears last night that were gold with a very subltle leaf pattern. THey were gorgeous. Gold works well iwth sage and tan. Good luck!

A rich crimson or purple would be an awesome contrast if you want to jazz it up. If you want to keep it calm, I'd consider tan with a dark sage stripe at the bottom.
But it really depends on how much light you want coming in the windows. If you want to close them off completely, I'd go with one of the darker colors. But if you want to let in as much light as possible, a sheer white might be your best option.

Do you want a solid color or a pattern??
Solid, I would match the chair.
Pattern, I would play off of the chair color, coordinate the sage & tan --- and by pulling in a pattern, you will be able to subtlely pull in a Burgandy or something.

I would play off of the dark sage chair and get curtains that are close to its color. take a swatch of fabric in with you when you go looking

I think red would jazz it up a little. If you don't like red then get a colour close to red!
