My daughter is 7 and finally said she needed "private time" to take a bath. Thank God. I was afraid I'd still be in there at 16!

I would say it depends on the child. My kids have been showering alone since 6, but occasionally need help with shampoo or conditioner (or a forgotten towel)(or soap in the eye) and they don't act self conscious at all.
The child usually lets you know that they are ok to shower alone - but stay within shouting distance!

When you are certain they are safe and when they feel the privacy is necessary.
My 4.5 year old can generally shower alone, but she still prefers to shower w/ me or her daddy. When she desires privacy, we will oblige.
A 3 year old might be a little young to shower completely alone. There is still the risk of slipping and scalding. I'd probably wait another year or so, at least.

When they have proven to you that they are fully capable of doing the shower completely themselves.. 3 years old is too young. My oldest daughter was doing it well on her own at 5... she is now 8.. I have a 5 year old now that is still not doing her hair well, so I help her only with that.. I stand on the other side of the curtain while she washes her body.. because she does well with that.. SO it really depends on your child's capabilities... Good luck!

my kids are 5 and 6. They've been showering alone for over a year now. I used to wash their hair but they've gotten good at it so I start the water, measure out the shampoo and let them go at it. When their done they shut off the water, get out, dry off, go get jammies on and go on with their life. But it depends on the maturity of the kid. Good luck. Hope this helps

I would not let my 3 year old bath/shower alone for fear. I say about 6-7 it is best to let them shower alone.

3 might be a bit young. I would let them self-shower at the time that they show they can properly cleanse themselves. Hygene is what's most important here. Once they start showering on their own...spot check on occasion to ensure proper hygene health.

My kids were around 6 or 7 when they asked for privacy. Of course, I still had to check behind their ears and in the crooks of their elbows, and sometimes I still had to rinse hair, too.
Just assume they need your help until they tell you otherwise.

3 yrs is a good age to learn to shower. i always wash the hair and make sure the area is safe. give the child the tools to wash and check frequently. i would always turn the water pressure down, so as not to waste.
