You are referring to a tithe. We are to support the church. It is 10% of our salary and it SHOULD be considered the right thing to do. A lot of Christians forget that God has made it a command & NOT a suggestion.

Many people question tithes and offerings. I look at it this way when I pay my tithes and offerings I am obeying God. If that Church is not using the money for Godly purposes they will answer for their misdeeds.
People, many Christians too, don't believe or have the faith that God will take care of his people who are honestly trying to obey him.
Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Mal 3:9 Ye [are] cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, [even] this whole nation.
Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that [there shall] not [be room] enough [to receive it].
God said he will open up the store house and POUR out a blessing and he HAS done that for me plenty of times.

a willingness to help support the church
something has to be given to help keep it running
if it's a church you are a member of and go then it is your responsibility to help keep things going
the bible teaches to give your tithes and offerings to the "storehouse" which is the church
