As many have said, both Catholics and Protestants are Christian. Protestants "protest." Hence the term.

You see, back in the 1500's came the Black Death. Many many people died. Priests had to be raised up really fast. Some of them slipped through with very poor formation (that is teachings on the church)

Martin Luther was one such priest. Very poorly formed. He decided to become a priest only after being caught in an electric storm. He vowed to become a priest if God let him survive.

Luther was such a nervous man he spilled the communion wine during his first mass.

Luther could have done a lot of good. God has always and will always raise up reformers when the church goes astray. It had gone astray in Luther's time as well.

So. Here is Martin Luther with a very poor understanding of his church. He begins to notice things he things are wrong. Many of them WERE wrong. However, many of them were just things he did not understand.

The part where he went wrong is, he gave in to ego. His battle stopped being righteous and became self-righteous. As such, people started to die.

So that was the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther burned many Catholics and Jews at the stake as heretics.

Martin Luther was also the first to begin pulling books from the bible that supported Catholic dogma. He pulled many books from the Old Testament, hence there is a 6 book difference between Catholic and Protestant bibles. He wanted to pull many from the New Testament as well, but the people wouldn't have it.

That was in Germany. In England we had young Henry VIII. Young Henry was a devout Catholic. He was even awarded the honor of Defender of the Faith when he refuted Martin Luther.

Sadly, his wife could not give him a son. So he asked the pope for a divorce, so he could marry his now pregnant mistress. A barren wife is no reason for a divorce and a defender of the faith should not have a mistress. The pope was not pleased.

So Henry split from Rome. Declared himself head of Church (of England) and state, killed several wives, robbed all the churches who wouldn't sign up with him. Slaughtered millions of Catholics.

More burning at the stake. Priests were captured and tortured. Refusing to sign up with Henry was an act of treason.

His daughter Elizabeth I was even worse. Read Edmund Campion by Evelyn Waugh for an idea.

After that, Christianity just fell apart. 10 new Protestant denominations are launched each year.

Both Protestants and Catholics are Christians. Protestants separated themselves from Catholicism around the 1500's
(google "Reformation" also "Martin Luther")

Protestants believe that the Vatican has twisted the Christian faith to the point where it looks nothing like it did when Jesus walked the earth.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.

A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.

With love in Christ.

The Protestants and Catholics represent two divisions within Christianity; hence, they are both Christian.

Catholics are Christian. They are a sect of Christianity like Baptists, Jehovah Witnesses, Lutherans, Mormons, Protestants, ETC. ETC. They all may have a different views on Christ, but they all recognize Him as their Savior.

Why do you have to focus on differences and realize the similarities of peoples faith. Are humans that bigoted that they can't see past ones religion to see the admirable qualities of people?
