YOu will usually notice increased frequency in urination, along with decreased amounts of urine. You may also feel what they call urgency...that is, you feel like you need to go all the time. There is occaisional blood in the urine, though not always visible. There can be pain, either at the end of the urine stream, or the whole time. This can be at the meatus, or it can be suprapubic. If thereis actual kidney involvement, you will either have pain or tenderness in the flank area of the back (base of the ribcage area) and may have a fever.
YOu may sometimes feel the symptoms of a urinary tract infection (general term) if you are sexually active, even without actually having a measurable infection.
When you feel such symptoms, unless you have a medical condition which requires you to restrict fluids, you should immediately increase your fluid intake, especially in hot weather. (Some women get symptoms when mildly dehydrated.) Even thought this may seem counter-intuitive when you already feel like you are spending all your time in the bathroom, in fact, this alone can take care of an infection in the early stages, by diluting the irritants, and flushing the system. It also generally decreases the pain, and if you keep it up, will cause you to 'pee' normal amounts, and decrease the pressure and frequency. You may basically drink anything that is not diuretic (so avaoid lots of caffeine, and alcohol). Cranberry juice is good, but, water is fine, too...as long as you are not too dehydrated. If you are dehydrated, drink juices or gatorade, for the electrolytes. If you get no relief, or if you are running a fever, see your health care provider.

You'll feel pain in your back, about where the lowest part of your rib cage is, on either side. You will run a fever, feel nauseated, possibly sweaty. Your urine will be cloudy or blood tinged and may have a bad odor. When the doctor puts his hand over your kidney and pounds his fist lightly on his hand, you'll feel much pain.
If you think you have a kidney infection, you need antibiotics. Drinking fluids is fine, but without antibiotics, the infection will spread and cause damage to your kidneys.

Usually kidney infection start with cystitis, pain, burning and frequency, and this spreads up the ureter and results in kidney infection. Occasionally the cystitis has produced minimal problems and is not noticed, rarely a primary kidney infection occurs, this is more common if there is an underlying abnormality. If you have had no other symptoms other possibilities include renal stone or gravel. See your GP who may want to investigate. (Bring a bottle).

Usual infection unwellness and fever feeling. You might have a pain in your back where your kidneys are, you might be sick, you might notice blood in your urine, pus in urine (cloudy urine), offensive urine, difficulty passing urine, confusion...
Honestly, kidney and urinary tract infections affect everybody differently, but they are serious if left untreated.
If you think you have one, go to your GP/local treatment centre and get your urine tested.
If you find you haven't, but the pain persists, go to your GP.
Good luck! x
