I'm getting married soon and I have people telling me they want "big gift ideas". One is for my bridal shower and the other is for the wedding. What do I ask for? I have basically everything I need to start an apartment. I'm trying to think of heirloom quality goods that my DH and I will use them as well as pass them on to our kids. Any ideas?

Btw, we don't drink so wine glasses are out. The only big ticket items that are left are a couch and dining room chairs but I don't want to ask for that.

But thats what they really want to know is stuff like that! For example if you have picked out a dining room set and it is at furniture store that has gift cards--they would prefer to get you a gift card for something you really want than at a store that you only want little kitchen items at.

We put a down comforter on ours (about 200 dollars) that we used our giftcards for. Do you have a kitchenaid? That is often a big ticket item. If there is a really nice vase that you want, or a large piece of art, a lot of brides put matching luggage sets.

Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn are both excellent places since you could just put on there a futon, or a large bookshelf (we put this one on ours and it inspired a relative to get the measurements and build it for us)

Or outdoor furniture, like adirondack chairs. A coffee table. It's more for those who are getting you a gift card--they like to feel it was actually a contribution to the coffee table.

People just want an idea of what you hope your living room looks like as most of them aren't going to be able to see your house. Or groups like to get together and get you one big gift or large gift card, instead of a bunch of 10-20 dollar ones.

It also helps with thank you notes. You can write to everyone who gave you a gift card that you used it to get "the bedroom set from our registry."

It's not greedy or that you think someone will actually get you a couch. But they'd hate to get you a really large gift card to Pottery Barn, and find out that the couch you really wanted was from Crate and Barrel and if they'd bought the gift card from there instead, you could have used it for something you really wanted.

Congratulations on the wedding btw.

You can register with most department stores for bridal shower and wedding gifts. Basically they set up an account for you and you walk through the store with a scanner. As you see an item that you need (want), you scan the bar code. It gets entered into a list that anyone can view. Notify your guest which stores that you have registered at (usually on the invitations) and they can pick items for you that are on your list. As an item on your list is purchased, it will be removed so there is no hassle of repeat gifts. It ensures the gifts are things you need while giving the people the freedom of choosing what to buy. It has been around a while and is considered to be quite acceptable as a modern wedding custom.

Why don't you have a jar or something decrative for people to put money/checks in to go towards your honeymoon. I had a friend do this for their wedding for the same reason as you, they had what they wanted. So they made up a write up of what they were doing for their honeymoon and what the money would go towards. This way people could give as much or as little as they wanted without anyone getting upset, and they knew it was going towards making wonderful memories.....Just a thought.....

China & flatwear are good. Also places like crate & barrell and pottery barn have good registeries where you can get furniture. If a couple of people chip in together the cost of a couch wont be so much.

I would make a registry and have people buy from that; put those big ticket items on there and see what people do. I would recommend registering for wine glasses and such, even if you don't use them in your everyday life. They would be good to have for entertaining purposes.

When they ask what you want say, "It doesn't matter to me." and then they'll get you something and if you don't like it check it for a gift receipt.

When people ask that tell them you would like to have money to help you purchase a sofa and dining room set.

Don't give responses. Say that you will be pleased with whatever they choose.
