Well... first of all, I don't suggest a detachable bell, simply because I think it takes away from the beauty of a French Horn. But if that's your thing, don't let me stop you. :) Also, why are you after a smaller horn? If you are still young, you could possibly grow into your horn. In my personal opinion, Conns are some of the very best horns. I would just look at stores that had them available for you to hold and find out what best suits you. If you have any more questions about the French Horn, or music for that matter, I would be glad to help. Just go to my profile and ask. Good luck.

Dear Lizard,
the Conn 8D happens to be the most popular horn in the States, and most orchestras will ask you to change to that instrument if you happen to get a job there. In Europe it's a little different, with various groups requiring the same thing, but on different horns. Most people here play an Alexander horn or a Yamaha, and they have nothing against the screw-on flare.
My husband plays with the Symphony Orchestra of Aachen in Germany. They are all Alexander players, with the 103 model.
Can you try one out at your local music store? Most good stores will give you a time limit, and you do have to use your own mouthpiece for hygienic reasons.
Good luck
P.S. have you checked out The Horn Call magazine? Lots of ads.
