If you let your new employer have your P45 as soon as possible they should be able to work out what tax code you should be on so you are not overtaxed. As you have been unemployed for 6 months and the tax year is almost over i would estimate (not knowing your income) that you will not owe any tax on your March pay. You may also be due a rebate. You can get this by calling/writing to the revenue after the end of the year (April). They have always been fairly efficient with me. Remember to keep copies of all your P45's for the year as this is important information for a rebate (your last job and the job centre).

The next tax year should be back to normal.
if you are trying to calculate the tax you owe yourself don't forget that they will include the amounts you got for "Jobseekers allowance" even though it was not taxed when you received it!

The Jobcentre should make a tax refund to you at the same time as they issue your new P45. They did this very efficiently for me recently, but when I worked for HMRC years ago, they quite often didnt. If you don't get your P45 within a week of payday, ask your payroll dept for a P46 - you can at least sign this and avoid basic rate tax, the reclaim overpaid tax later.

Speaking from experience, since the UK Inland Revenue is the most efficient in the world especially at overtaxing people who have just started a new job, you will probably be taxed at a much higher rate for the first few weeks, and will have to claim it back by going to the tax office. If your wages aren't that high and you have been out of work for 6 months, your taxable pay for this tax year will probably be quite low, and you will probably be eligible for a substantial rebate. Make sure you keep all your payslips and tax documents so you are not overpaying tax, and get to the tax office asap.

even if it truly is a small sum the IR could enable it run or regulate your tax code so that you receives it again in instalments over the year. they could also only deliver you a cheque yet they could verify your go back first and do the mandatory place of work artwork so it may take some weeks. in case you want the money supply them a hoop on the helpline and clarify, they are frequently efficient to trustworthy human beings.

Depending on your income, probably a bit of both.
