I am due in June and plan on taking the entire summer off after the baby comes. In the fall howevever, we are asking the wife of my husband's friend to watch the baby from around 10 AM to 3 PM, 4-5 days per week. Since I know there may be days when I don't need her until 11 or she may have to stay some days until 4, how much could I give her per month to be fair?

I take my 2 year old to daycare and have in the past I had a private person watch her, I pay $20 a day at daycare and paid $25 at private. I also pay this for a full day 9 hours, the half day price (4.5 hours or less) is $10 and at private care it was $15. Good Luck!!!! You could also consider asking this women what she believes is fair.

Unless she prefers a set monthly rate, I would pay her hourly, and based on a set number of hours. If you need her from 10-4, pay her from 10-4, even if you get home at 3. If you work 8-5 and your boss lets you off at 3pm, you'd still expect to be paid til 5pm. Depending on the area you live depends on the amount per hour, but babysitters for infants in my area are about $10-12 a hour. Nannies even more.

It might be better to use a daycare center or in-home daycare provider, to cover the range of hours and be cost-effective. Some do part-time or part-day rates for infants.

I watch my friends kid and we agreed at $10 per hour but left it at that- This is an infant standard here but may not be the same in your area. The problem with a flexible schedule like that is her day will be at the mercy of your schedule so you dont want her to feel as if you have taken advantage of her. I have heard many times of a sitter getting burnt out and the parent being stuck with an expensive last min daycare because of it. But you also dont want it to be so expensive that you may as well go to a daycare to start off. I would sit down with her and agree to an hourly fee and then leave it at hourly so that you know what you are getting into and so does she. Infants are tough at times with teething and sleep patterns and all the work and gear that comes with them. As long as you set a bunch of ground rules (days off, vacations, sick days, late days, shorter days etc..and how much notice for all of the above) before you get started you should be in good shape.

Try for $25 a day. One month should be around $500. Which is a little on the cheap side.

It usually depends on where you live. I live in upstate NY and usually a daycare provider gets $125 a week for one child.

I charge $15.00 to babysit one child. But with those short hours I would probably only charge someone that I know $10.00 daily.
