He didn't have that name then. He changed it after his conversion to Islam (after he left the Navy).

Secret clearance is the lowest clearance you can get, by the way and nearly everyone on a base or post has it. It's not a big deal. Sheesh, even I had secret clearance and I was a DoD civilian. All it means is that I had an FBI backround check and nothing more.

A secret clearance isn't very high up on security. When I was in the service that was given to just about everyone. The FBI checks your background and if you are secure enough to be in the service, you are granted a secret clearance. Secret gives you virtually no access to sensitive information.

A security clearance involves a lot more that just checking the origin of you name.

Since AbuJihaad means "Father of the Holy War"and Hassan was the name of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, I am guessing that what ever position he needed did not require a psych exam for the clearance.
Maybe changing his name from Paul Hall to something Arabic soundinf that roughly mean "Muslim Father of the Holy War" should have tipped someone to a possible mental instability not worthy of the clearance.

First, to refuse him a security clearance based on his name is racial profiling and that is VERY non-PC.

Second, for any security clearance there is a required background check. Apparently, this didn't turn up any dirt on the guy. Or, maybe somebody over at Naval Intelligence pencil whipped the background check. Either way, they end up with egg on their face.

Why did Ryder truck rent a vehicle to Timothy MacVeigh? Why did the agricultural coop sell him so much fertilizer? Oh yah, because with his wholesome name, he couldn't be up to no good.

My point is, if you're going to be basing such things just on name, we may as well still be punishing all the Brenners, Muellers, Steiners etc etc for being German sounding.

Heck look at the neocons right here on YA always pointing out Barak Obama's middle name as if he is in Al Qaida. Here's news for you, he goes to CHURCH. That's a lot better than most people calling him a terrorist.

Gee, ever heard of anything called "racial profiling"? And have you heard the liberals screaming about what a horrible thing it is to do to someone?

Do you think they might have run afoul of the idiotic ideas of folks who wish harm to the United States?

Of course, the jerk didn't use an Islamic sounding name when he enlisted -- he "converted" to it after he got out.

Umm, in order to be in the armed forces atall you have to get a security clearance. I think this dude changed his name after joining...

But, that still doesn't mean Arabic name = bad guy. You're falling for a logical fallacy if you seriously beleive that.

He used an American Name "Paul".

You will see that on YA answers all the time. Islamic's using americanized names. They know the score.

Hmmmmmm. Good question. I'd would prefer to think it was just navy personnel trying to be politically correct.
