Banning of Electronic Devices in school? (Notre Dame High)?

Recently, a school in Ottawa (Notre Dame) has banned the use of electronic devices. Do you think this is a good idea or not? Perhaps there are other measures that can be taken INSTEAD for privacy.

I absolutely believe that it is a good idea for electronic devices to be banned. There is no need for them at all in an educational environment. You should be there to learn, and having phones, ipods, gameboys, etc is just a distraction and wastes teachers time in them having to regulate their use. If there is a need for you to be contacted, the office should be able to find you quickly if you are where you are supposed to be.

It is definitely a good idea. Cell phone calls are a nuisance in certain situations, and a class room is one of them. I would say that having them shouldn't be a big deal, but taking calls in class should be banned. If a student is caught making calls during school hours, it should be confiscated until the end of the school year, no exceptions. Some kids will have the decency and responsibility to keep their cell phones put away until school is done, so taking them away completely is not the answer. There are other purposes of cell phones nowadays, besides making calls(i.e. calculator, organizer, PDA, etc.) and I feel that the teachers should look into every situation that could arise before completely banning them.

I think it's a good thing. You don't need to have a cell phone on you while your in school. If someone needs to reach you because of an emergency, they can do so through the school's office. If a friend needs to reach you, they can find you after class. I really don't see any reason why you need a cell phone while in school.

Even in college, cell phones are banned from some classes. We would get in trouble if our phone rang during a lecture.
