I don't know what I should do. It looks painful. One of his claws recently broke near the base. It doesn't seem to be tender or hurting him at all but they are just so short.

Don't worry this is perfectly NATURAL! my cats do this all the time. It is only a natural way of cleaning themselves. You can't stop it. But make sure that your cat isn't biting on the red part of its nails that would make it start to bleed. But that normally doesnt happen.

If you get a hang nail or have an irritation around your fingernails, you would probably use a nail clipper to alleviate the problem.
Your cat may have a painful area, infection, hang nail, or other irritant around the nail that broke. He is probably trying to get rid of the irritant.
All cats pull and chew the sheath of their claws when they become loose or break. Keep a close eye on your cats paw. If it seems infected or swollen, take him to the veterinarian asap. Do not use any home remedies, as cats are sensitive to many human treatments, whereas dogs can usually be treated with human medicines, cats can not.

well if your cat is chewing its claws it is obviously a nervous reaction which is caused mainly by stress, just think about what do alot of people do when they are nervous???, they chew their nails, you cats claws will grow back dont worry about many cats do this, other cats chew their fur out, bite their tails because they are angry and so fourth, basically if you give your cat something to chew on maybe a toy, it might just stop the claw business

Cats will chew their claws to clean them. If your kitty doesn't seem to be in pain, don't worry just yet.

However, if the kitty is bleeding, THEN take him to the vet.

Good luck!

The cat is probably cleaning them. I wouldn't worry too much about it's chewing on them.

Sorry bro. You need to chop his claws off. Call him stubs from now on.

I wish my dog would do this - then I wouldn't have to trim his claws.

If they're not tender or hurting I wouldn't worry about it.

Do you have a scratching post for him? Do you clip his claws regularly? Ask your vet about this.....

Egads... that's obsessive compulsive I think. It may be best to have him declawed if he's this intent on removing them himself.
