You might call it "botany"?

Germination (note corrected spelling) is the activation or sprouting of a seed. Seed companies, farmers, or food producers all have an interest in knowing the germination rates of seeds. So a scientist (botanist) or plant technician does a simple procedure of planting or sprouting seed and counting how many grow. And of course, there's a lot of interesting science with it as well.
