A plant. He probably doesn't have any. Make it one that can tolerate abuse.

Yeah his fav booze will be good. You could also get nice shot glasses or bar ware, like beer glasses.

If he is remotely tolerant of smoking, or is a smoker, you could get him some cigars or fancy cigarettes similar to what he already likes.

You could get him a home repair book if he is kind of clueless and owns his first home. Perfect companion item for this would be a first aid kit! hahaha! Or a house cleaning book like how to get out stains, how to clean fast, what products for what mess, etc.

You could get him a gift card for use at his cable or satellite TV company, or a pay per view gift certificate, or a season pass for a premium sports channel.

You could get him a food gift, a "man-friendly gift basket".

Container might be a dish drainer, a chip or salad bowl, a crock pot, a cooler, a big kettle for pasta. You might fill it with food items and then nice accessories to use with that item. Like grilling tools with a package of steaks and rubs or marinades. Or you could go for varieties of rices, beans, or pastas and a nice ladle or tongs, spices to make chili. You could get him all kinds of condiments...hot sauces, horseradishes, mustards, marinades, spices, rubs, salad dressings, seasoning packets. You could give a variety of nice breads and a nice oil suitable for dipping...and then some cheese spreaders or dipping bowls, and a serrated knife. You could do a salad gift with really hearty greens, different kinds of peppers, onions, etc, round it out with a salt and pepper mill set, or a salad dressing carafe with recipes printed on the bottle. Or a root gift of different kinds of potatos, carrots, turnips, etc, as well as onions and garlics...this would be neat presented in a wooden bin designed to hold such things.

Instead of a regular plant, I would go with an edible. A pepper or tomato plant, or an herb garden.

You could also do the typical stuff, books, DVDs, music.

You could get him a manly bath and body gift like a shaving soap or a macho moisturizer or an body wash shampoo combo in a manly scent.

You could do a gift of cleaning supplies presented in a mop bucket. Get the kinds that are easy to use like wipes.

You could do a practical thing like a snake lamp or a mag light or a set of jumper cables, or a fire extinguisher.

How bout a fish bowl or starter aquarium??

Editing now...blow up doll is hilarious...You could also do a cardboard cutout of a woman to put in the window...so it looks like he has a girlfriend. This is a twist on "safety guy" where a cardboard man in the window keeps a lady's house from getting broken into.

Anything that will help in the kitchen if he is a foodie: grill, bottle openers, holders (fancy and cheap ones can be found) or if he is a gamer gift certificate for games.
A more classic though, depending on your friendship, a framed pic of all of his closest friends.
damn this was tough.

a nice tool set, or wine. can't go wrong with alcohol. there are some small microbrewerys that have their "taste of the world"- it's basically a 12 pack with 12 different types of beers. I gave that to a guy- huge hit.

i would suggest you give him a nice easy to manage house plant like a cactus or aloe. or a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant...most bachelors dont like cooking unless it involves getting some action or a microwave. if he is a love interest offer to help him get set up in his new place and give his place a womans touch.

How about a house plant?
But- you got to put it in a nice container- or it may stay in the little plastic one from the nursery for years to come.
