Military: n. generally refers to a permanent, professional force of soldiers or guerrillas—trained exclusively for the purpose of warfare.

Military has been around since the earliest of recorded times. Although the first militaries were very small and primitive in their weaponry, through the centuries there were gradual advances in both weapons and technique. The first militaries were hardly militaries at all. They were just simple groups of people armed with stones and clubs and any other object that could inflict injury on an enemy combatant. The earliest known military was the armies of Mesopotamia, now known as Iraq. Empires such as the Assyrians and Akkidians were the powers of their time, and were the first to utilizes bronze or metal as a weapon. However, technique was primitive and ruthless. But the Egyptians made the most technologically advanced and skilled military of the time. And for the first time, military was used as a part of a nations economy. The next great empire were the Greeks, their armies and tactics were unrivaled throughout the world. Perhaps the greatest military feat of all time was when only 300 Greek Spartans held off and invading Persian force of nearly half a million. This demonstrated that tactic can overcome numbers. And they defeated the Superpower of their time, the Persians, lead by General Alexander the Great. His army further proved that tactic can overcome numbers. However, the most successful and most powerful empire of all time, was soon to emerge. The Romans, were the Hyper-power of their time. The worlds most successful empire. The Romans at the height had an empire of over 3,000,000sq. miles and a population of 50,000,000! This was only possible by the worlds most dominant military of all time. The Romans had large militaries, but were often out numbered by the enemy in their battles, but their sophisticated armor, unparalleled tactics, strict discipline, and their advanced weaponry; they were seldomly defeated in any battle. But like all empires the Romans met their end, many believe because of the rise of Christianity, or because of civil war. The middle ages from the collapse of the Roman's led to a new era of warfare. Often cruel and bloody, the mid-age warfare was majorly altered with a discovery all the way from China, gun powder. From the mid-ages came the renaissance, along with it the creation of guns and muskets, and cannons. Though the first of these weapons were primitive and hard to use, all other weapons, including the sword, became obsolete because of advances in gun technology. Out of it came, the rifle, and from tht machiine guns. Because of these deadly weapons, the tactic of simply over running your enemy became a thing of the past. Machine guns had the ability to kill hundreds, and new tactics were made. Trenche warfare was the new tactic. But with the creation of the tank and warplanes, rushing the enemy with new metal cavalry and bombing the enemy from above became the new tactic, demonstrated by Nazi Germany's "Blitzkrieg". This would remain the tactic until the '90's when cruise missile and smart missile technology became a reality. This new type of warfare was demonstrated by the US in the 1991 Gulf War against Iraq. And later in the Bosnian War, and finally the War in Iraq beginning in 2003.

But no matter what, technology and tactics will change, but military will always be a countries elite defensive force.
