Canon makes reliable cameras. The A540 at it's best setting at 6 megapixels should give you about 640 shots if you bought a 2 GB memory card. About 310-320 shots if your memory card is 1 GB. Using any camera at less than it's BEST setting will give you a lot more shots. Go for quality and use it's best setting. It's a fine camera.

i have an a530 and it takes amazing pictures dont waste your money on the a540 it is only a 1 mega pixel difference and unless you do a lot of cropping and editing you dont need anymore than a 5 megapixel camera.spend the extra cash you saved on that 2gb memory card you will want and it will hols 640 pictures.i love my powershot and would not buy a different brand camera canons are the best i own two, a 35mm slr and my a530.hope this helps you make your decision

the number of pictures depends on the size of the card that you buy to go with the camera, and the size and quality of the photos you want to store.
It takes an SD card (very common), and you can get hundreds on even a 'small' 512mb card.
some people have reported problems with theirs- but mostly, probably as reliable, if not more reliable than any other digicam. Canon has been doing this for a while. But- realize that their A series is their lower priced lineup. For $190, it's not your only choice out there- nor your best.

It's more than reliable, it's a good camera. I just recently purchased it for my sister. It is reasonably priced, easy to use and takes awesome pictures, what more could you want. The number of pictures you want stored on it is completely up you. You will need to purchase an SD card. Unfortunately that doesn't come with it. The larger amount of gigabytes you purchase the more pictures you can store on the card.
