Its almost lake and pool season and I am so self-conscious about my fair skin. Everyone around me is tan and I am really white because of my Irish heritage. I tried the fake spray thing from a tanning salon and the minute I was in the water it washed off. And no matter how much I lay out I either get burnt or it goes away. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Don't do it.. ask yourself if you want to live with damaged skin.. melanoma etc.. if all you do is burn in the sun why do want to continue the abuse of your skin? Which is the largest organ on your body.. love the skin your in!!!

Here are some tips on how to make a "fake-bake" tan last. First of all, let the spray dry for a few minutes before putting on your clothes. Then, avoid water (lakes, pools or showering) for 24 hours afterwards to let the spray develop its full color. You will see some color rinsing off in water, that's just the bronzer that is used in the tanning spray. It helps you see where the spray was applied to make sure it's even. I agree with the previous person who said that you should avoid tanning in the sun. The sunless tanning products are great and they don't cause cancer!

I live in the Caribbean and I had a good friend who was Irish and very white. She lived there for years and no matter what she was never able to get a tan. Some people's skin just isn't cut out for tanning and if yours is not you would be wise to take care of it. You might try one of those creams that will slowly give you a tan. Hawian Tropic has one that has worked for me. You can't get a dark tan from it but will get some color and it actually changes the color of your skin pigment so it doesn't wash off.

I use tanning beds, but you must start out just a few minutes at a time. I never really get TAN, compared to some people, but I do get some color. Also, I then supplement this with self-tanning lotions, especially on my legs. Combined with the tanning bed, the color looks pretty natural. With the self-tanning lotions, you also must be very careful and wash it off the palms of your hands and around your fingernails after rubbing it onto where you want it.

because your so fair u dont want to go too dark...I am from an Irish backround to and i had the same problem for my sisters wedding...who happens to take after the english side of our family and tans like a dream... i didnt want to stand out in pics...so i start to fake n' bake...really its not that bad, i would go 2 times a week and only for 5 minutes to start and worked my way up to 8 minutes, but no longer...i got the beautiful caramel color for the wedding and i wasnt too dark either, and now i dont even burn that easly anymore, hey its worth a try, right.

I mean fake n' Bake as in tanning beds, not spray on

if you really want a tan, then start using a tanning bed. Use a lotion to help you tan better and to keep you from burning. Just use it until you get to color you are comforable with because you don't want skin cancer or anything. Be safe.

good luck
