Being gay helped me overcome my Catholic brainwashing. I understood that there was nothing wrong with me, and that since my religion was telling me that there was, there must be something wrong with my religion!

Of course, I like to think I would've figured out that it was all bilgewater anyway. People ought to outgrow "religion" by the time they're tall enough to ride roller coasters; the only reason they don't is the aforementioned brainwashing.

It's just sad that some gay people turn that hatred and ignorance inwards on themselves; but I suppose it's a good "rough test of a soul."

Others simply pretend that they can ignore those aspects of religion and go on calling themselves "Catholic" or what-have-you in spite of their homosexuality. They can't. You have to take organized, dogmatic religion as you find it - or as it finds you. The whole point is that you "believe" rather than doing any original thinking for yourself. "Unitarian" type churches are nice, and I appreciate the thought, but they shouldn't call themselves "Christian" - shouldn't WANT to. It's as if I started a neo-Nazi organization but insisted that it wasn't antisemitic!

I used to be part of a religion that sheltered pedophiles while calling me somehow less than human and not worthy of happiness... now I'm Buddhist. Of course, I arrived at Buddhism based more on philosophy and analytical study rather than fleeing hatred, but that hatred (which at one time I'd internalized and actually hated myself too, thanks to all those self-righteous characters out there, until I got wise) contributed to proof that religion ain't all it's cracked up to be.
