I may not be right, but I look at "going out" with someone as that you aren't looking for a serious relationship and may still be allowed to see other people. Being bf/gf or bf/bf or gf/gf to me means that you want an exclusive relationship and that you have been or will be with the person for a while. I could be wrong though.

Being exclusive. Do you talk on the phone every day, keep stuff at each other's places, are the weekend dates implied? If you answer yes to these than most likely you are BF/GF.

Having a bf or gf means that you are exclusive. You do not see other people, you only date one another.

If you're just going out, then it means the male has to be exclusive or the female throws a tantrum and breaks all his stuff, but she still gets to sleep around all she wants. When you're BF/GF, it means the male has to be exclusive or the female throws a tantrum and breaks all his stuff, but she still gets to sleep around all she wants... and she just lies about it. And you have to buy her stuff.

They're both a nowin situation. I recommend prostitution.

Your intentions. Do you want to run with the masses by doing what everyone else does -having a 'trim', or do you really care about this person and want to spend time with them?

You might not actually love this person or even like them. Going out with this person may show how you truly feel about them. You can also see what they are really like.

Basically whether you're exclusive to each other or not is what makes the difference.
