The wood warps????? Is it awfully cheap, or thin?
I refinished my kitchen cabinets a few years ago. It was tedious and took a long time, but the end result was nice, and it cost almost nothing.
First, I lightly sanded them to remove the clearcoat, which was becoming gooey from the grease in the air. Then, I touched up the stain with a gel stain (currently hard to find, but excellent for refinishing). Then I put polyurethane on it.
You can get a really nice effect with paint, but it will not have a "light wood look;" it will have a painted look.
If the wood is warping, it may not be worth the effort to refinish it. You can paint it for a multi-colored look (cabinets one color, doors another shade or contrasting color), or paint a basic color and stencil them. Both would give them a country look.
If you paint them, be sure to sand the yucky stuff off first, then prime them, to make sure the paint sticks.
You might also think of new cabinets from a home improvement store. I got a single cabinet for about $80. Not cheap, to be sure, but not what a professional would charge, either.

You can paint them but I am not sure how you are going to get the light wood look with paint, something I did to my own cabinets to bring them back to life was taking a stain close to the color of my cabinets and brushing it on and then wiping the excess stain off, this just sort of made them look fresh again, if they are real wood of course. If they are not real wood and particle board, which it sounds like they could be because of the warping then you might be able to use a gel stain, it does not penetrate but sits on top of the surface but will dry quite nicely in several hours, you still use a brush and you can leave it with the brush strokes or brush some on and wipe it off like the can says to do, just work with it until you like the result. I think the freshest look right now is just taking off the most damaged or dirty doors completely and leaving them off, just spiff up the inside of the cabinet with paint or stain and display your prettiest dishes and glassware. Best of luck!

You are cleaning with the wrong product. Warping is bad, too much water. Try this instead, it's what the pro's use. If you do go to the paint step, consider taking them down and having them painted in paint shops. They do a much better job. Otherwise, you are looking at cleaning, sanding, priming, painting.......ARGH!!
The product to use is a two step: Doozy Pre-Cleaner and then Doozy Furniture Polish. www.doozy.com or (888) 851-8500.

Try to sand them down and stain them. After the stain dries add new knobs to them.
