I have seen how people act to people like this. Why does it happen?

I understand that this is as much rant as question and I agree with the rant part. My husband is disabled, He has used a chair in the past. He does not now by choice but that means that he can go about 10-20 steps maximum on a good day. I have seen my husband treated as if he were a retarded child when he has owned his own business, heads a ministry and has worked for international companies. I have seen him invent solutions to allow him to do things he needed and wanted to do that would never have occurred to someone who could just get up and do it.

There is no good answer to this question except that those ppl are themselves lacking in understanding, smarts, or information. Many also seem to think if you can't walk you can't hear so they yell like it takes louder words to reach the extra few inches to chair level. They compensate for their discomfort and ignorance by treating the disabled person as if their brain were located in their knees. (Sorry now I'm the one ranting.) But seriously it is simply a function of the person's own discomfort and not knowing how to act. Not that they shouldn't but they don't.

You probably know ppl who use chairs who are genius level or extreemly gifted in some things. To me the outstanding example is Bob who helped found and lead the Access Center for Indepenbdent Living in GA. He is a quadrapelegic with a mind that reached way way beyond the limites of his body to open doors for many others and to educate a lot of folks who had no concept of what disabled ppl need or what they can do.

If it is official type ppl in government, schools or businessed the Americans with Disabilities Act gives specifc rights and recourses in dealing with them. For life in general the best education is for folks in wheelchairs and with other disabilities to go on and excell at the things that they can and want to do and to work positively with the media from local papers to school newsletters to national TV to be sure the public sees that they are "real" and able and definitely not dumb. Sometimes all it takes to change this ios for the person inn the chair to take time to really talk with the other person and let them know them a bit as a person who may share their interests and opinion and who can hold their own in conversation. Bob is very talented at that.

If that's true then that's sad. I don't act that way. However, I find it difficult to shake the expectation that people suffering from muscular distrophy (or other similar conditions) aren't suffering from a mental problem because very often people that suffer from mental retardation walk in a peculiar way. I know it's wrong and I know that many, many people have muscular problems but no mental problems and it's something I try to work on keeping in the front of my mind so that I don't ever accidentally offend someone by starting off a conversation in a patronizing way.

People just don't know how to deal with stuff like that. I don't think they assume you are stupid. Most likely, they feel stupid for not knowing what to do, or say. So, they stare They are the ones acting stupid. And there is nothing like seeing a person who suddenly makes you aware that you are not invincible.

I personally don't think that you're stupid,Just an unfortunate person.I have a friend that was told he may never walk again, but in his case he worked very very hard and beat all odds and now walks(not well)but he walks. You are right that people can be ignorant of other peoples problems and that makes them ignorant and act stupid have pittey on them.Good Luck to you.God Speed to you.

I have never been around people in wheelchairs that were stupid, I don't know why you would ask such a question...Maybe in the town you live in they are treated stupid. Where do you live? I just want to know, so I never go there.

I don't think it's that way at all. Maybe I'm naive. But, I believe that most people feel awkward around the victims in wheelchairs, because THEY don't ever want to be there themsleves, and they don't know how to converse with them.

People have stupid reactions out of ignorance. They are too ignorant to attempt to understand anything apart from themselves, in other words, egotistical + ignorant = very stupid. Also, there is sometime fear attached as well, so that makes it even worse.

I don't know anyone who believes that. Anyone who does is to be pitied, because they are in much worse shape than the person in the wheelchair.
