My weaker but prettier half Nermina is in charge of selecting music for the choir this weekend for our Sunday morning service.

We are so excited that we are having some colored people visit us from the NAACP in LA this weekend. They are traveling to do some sort of "reaching out to the masses" thing.

We are excited. The only question I have is what type of music should we play for those people. We are not really into funk (not in the church anyway, he he he) but is there anything else they like?

Any help is MUCH appreciated.

Whatever you do, don't serve Romulan ale to "them" at dinner.

And, yes, I do find it ironic that the current campaign of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is "The NAACP is Today!" There's been discussion about updating the name for decades, but no one has wanted to change it because it's so well known. UNICEF is another good example of this. The acronym stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, and has been kept, even though the name of the organization was shortened to United Nations Children's Fund.

Image of Abraham Lincoln: "What a charming negress. Oh, forgive me, my dear. I know in my time some used that term as a description of property."
Lt. Uhura: "But why should I object to that term, sir? In our century, we've learned not to fear words."
(From the "Star Trek" episode "The Savage Curtain," 1969)

I believe the correct terminology is not "coloreds" but African-Americans.

And as for the music selection, just keep it the same as you normally play. If they are there to observe how you perform your service, you should leave it the same so they know what you normally do.

As-salaamu alaykum - Peace be upon you

Edit: I do think it's quite ironic though that they oppose being called "colored" when the initials NAACP stand for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

First thing you can do is to stop using the term "coloreds". Just because the word is in the full name of the NAACP doesn't mean you should use it.

That term went out in the 1960s.

The first thing you should do is stop calling them "coloreds." Secondly, why don't you just sing your normal choir music? You obviously have no idea what they would like, so why patronize them and risk offending them? Just play your normal music and explain to them that this is how it's normally done at your church. They should understand and appreciate that.

Make sure to remove any gang colors from the pulpit, and be sure to have watermelon and fried chicken on the luncheon. Praise Republican Jesus! You can ply the same music just turn on a drum machine and have Father speak in rhythm and rhyme.

your weaker but prettier half, those people, ugh I wouldn't be surprised if "those people" didn't stick around for long. Just do lively upbeat songs that everybody can get into. Each one of them probably have different tastes in music, so try not to "black" it up too much.

....... colored? how old are you? the only people who still use that word are in their 70's!

calling them colored is very ignorant (as a "white" person are you not colored as well?)

there are many ways to refer to other races, find one that is more appropriate.

also black people arent really that into "Funk" anymore either. appropriate music for any church setting is gospel. just liven things up a little if your service is normally very scaled back.

wow I haven't heard "those people" referred to as "coloreds" in a while, since like the 50's-60's. You are a racist and I hope "those people" that are coming to your church see this question. I don't know what amazes me more the fact that you manage to use a computer or the fact that you have a computer in your trailer. You are a racist plain and simple
