I beat a dog at poker but he didn't even have any money and now he owes me £1265.
How do I get this money ?

Sell the debt to Tony Soprano for 60% of the face value. You at least get something, and you know Tony will get his money. He always does.

Don't play with dogs.
You can't take blood out of a stone.
There is no legal penalty for private games.
You can't lose what you never had.
When you play poker the money should go onto the table, if you accepted IOU's then you should have made sure he could pay before you played for money.
Put it down to experience.

Because they are cheats. There is no substitute for cash on the table or settling along the way when an agreed figure has been won/lost.
