Based upon your time availability, I suggest you contact Volunteer San Diego. They have the resources to connect you with some of the local organizations, or you can volunteer through their flexible volunteer program, as they have specific projects that cover your areas of interest.

I've led several projects with the organization, and they have several ongoing volunteer projects in which you work directly with local organizations to feed the homeless, package food for the needy, etc. They have volunteer projects that are on the weekends and evenings and lunch hours, so you can really be "hands-on" in the community.

Here is some information about the issues:

If you are looking for a more specific program, Volunteer San Diego also provides a referral service to over 800 local non-profit agencies in the area.

Volunteering for organizations that personally help the homeless and other people in poverty is a good idea. To make a larger impact you should get the voters of your area to get behind political canidates who vow to fight poverty. Volunteering for grassroots political organizations can be just as self-fulfilling.

Talk to someone in Student Affairs or Residence/Campus Life. Many colleges have service learning trips during spring break and other times. Many also have hook ups through the career development office.

Perhaps going to a local church that serves food to the homeless and volunteering to help serve. They are usually so busy helping, they don't answer e-mails that may not be sincere in the first place (yours was - many aren't).

Join and volunteer with Amnesty International. Most college campuses have a chapter. You will definitely make a difference.
