I fell in love with a guy, many years ago.It was the same for both of us, for the first time in our thirties. With bad timing we never ended up together. He was with someone, and took too long to make a decision, by which time, I was involved elsewhere.Although living in hundreds of miles apart now we still meet up every so often. We normally don't communicate much inside this period. But now that i have met someone else he has started to send me more intense love letters. But when I suggest meeting him, all has gone silent. What is his game?

He is just afraid, and unsure.

You need to be more assertive, and be clear about how you feel about him.

Also, it is possible that he is involved with someone else.

He sounds a little messed up to me. I say you have your answer and have had it years ago. I think you need to let go of the possibilities of him being in your life other than a occasional acquaintance.Move forward with whom you have now and give it the effort it needs. He has had his chance to be with you and has passed it up.Besides that, with the way that he is showing he is,its very likely that if you did get with him you would spend more time wondering what he really feels and wants rather than knowing and sharing in them.
Move ahead girl and leave the past behind.

Hes bored where he is at. He is looking for more excitment in his life. He is probably with someone who he doesnt want to be with so hes reaching out to the past to try and see if he can get some excitement. Dont be fooled hes not really into you hes using you as a scapegoat. Sorry.

While there are miles between you there are also some feelings, but a lot of other stuff that incessantly keeps him from connecting with you. Live you life. He is truly late.

He can't seem to make up his mind, you can sit around and wait for him to make up his mind or you can move on with your life and ignore him.

Or drive down to his house grab him and give him a big wet one right on the kisser, some men need that kind of jolting before they make up their mind.

It could be any one of the other answers so far...One thing for sure though, he really isn't worth your time.

Sorry, but it's time to move on...

I agree, you should just ask him, but although you're obviously close, it could be that he's just not worth the hassle for you
