My boyfriend gave me a Promise Ring and ever since people have been asking me if we are engaged. I tell them no, that it is a Promise Ring, and they ask what the promise is? Which is a really good question if you think about it. If the ring is to promise love and faithfulness, why not just call it an engagement ring? So what exactly is the meaning of a promise ring?

When I accepted the engagement ring I took it as a promise that my boyfriend will always be there when I need him, that he will love and care for me... but when you tell people that they say "then why didn't he just propose"? My boyfriend and I have been together for 3 years and I'm not pressuring him and don't want to get married, actually right now we are taking a very big step and looking for a place together, and I am more than satisfied with that... when he proposes I know it will be the perfect time because we will both be ready.

A promise ring is just that, it is a promise to be faithful and true to you, it shows that he loves you and wants to be with you always. Sometimes a man cannot afford the engagement ring he wants to give her, so he gives her a promise ring until he can afford the engagement ring.

imho it is an engagement ring... but since kids can't afford what parents think of as a proper engagement ring this will have to do for now... plus parent would freak out if you call it an egagement ring...

On the other hand... some folks see it as just a formal declaration of exclusive dating...

I think if you explain it as the latter folks will get it... but then again... you accepted the promise ring... perhaps you should have asked what you were promising... ???

and perhaps you should ask your boyfriend what he thought the "promise" was as well...

It's basically a promise to be married eventually. A lot of guys give one when their significant other is bothering them about marriage and they're not quite ready to commit. Just give him some time and it'll happen. It took me 3 years after receiving my promise ring before becoming engaged.

A promise ring is like promising yourself to someone-like staying faithful and eventually moving onto the next step

It's a promise to be with you as long as possible...a promise that could eventually turn into an engagement and wedding. A promise that he loves you and a way to let others know you're taken...lol.

A "promise ring" is a precursor to an "engagement" ring. It means he promises to ask to marry you (then you are engaged).

I'm 26 and my girlfriend is 20. She asked me if I would buy her a promise ring, and I said, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?"

It's something that wasn't done very often during MY high school years but happened quite a bit in HER high school years.

So I compromised and bought her a claddagh ring instead. Go, Irish!

it means you promise to stay with him unless things get bad. You should remain faithful to him, and him to you. he must have real love for you he also promises to marry you one day. its almost like an engagement ring. --Good Luck
