I do know that a HUMAN pregnancy test is testing for levels of HUMAN chorionic growth hormone but it's only called that because we gave the hormone its name. The dog pregnancy hormone maybe exactly the same as the human one?

The reason I'm asking Yahoo-help-ers is that Maisie (the dog) has had a phantom pregnancy before, and she is exhibiting the same symptoms as before - secretions from some of her nipples, ferocious appetite, ferocious, generally what I can only describe as PMT ish, digging holes and burying food.

She was in season at Christmastime and went missing one evening for a couple of hours............
But if the dirty deed was done then she would be having pups by now as I thought gestation was about 2 months. The problem I have this time is that I am now unemployed just starting my own business - I love her to bits but any sort of lab test at the moment would cripple me. So my idea was to try Boots et al pregnancy test. Please no Smart Arses. Thank you .

The reason Maisie is not spayed yet is because at the moment we are in that 6 month waiting period (after season) as advised by the vet. The last time I/we were in this waiting period I got admitted to hospital and missed the opportunity of the Op. So I definately agree that spaying is the answer. Thanks for all the wonderful help.

No a human pregnancy test does not work for dogs.
There are pregnacy tests for dogs but they aren't used all that often. The most used ways of confirming pregnancy besides simple vet exams are x-ray and ultrasound.
Gestation for a dog is 57 - 67 days with 63 being the average.

Dogs do not produce the same hormone. And if she was impregnated at Christmas, she would be long over due. She very well may be going through a false pregnancy, just the same as she did before. My dog is pregnant right now (due any day) and she was impregnated January 10th. Gestation is what you said, 2 months. So I truly believe this one is false also! Good luck!

No do not use the home human preganancy test on dogs! this is for dogs it measures relaxin not progesterone. There is a home pregnancy test avaliable for dogs at the vet by taking some blood at the vet and waiting aprox. 30 min. for the results. The one at the vet is called ReproCHEK. Its very similar to getting a heartworm test. The home kit is called The Witness Relaxin. You would suggest you call your vet and see what they recommend and order it.

No is the simple answer as oestrus levels in bitches are different to humans. Her hormones levels would be higher anyway in a phantom pregnancy (as hormone fluctuations are the cause). You probably need more meds from the vet then get her spayed asap to prevent further probs as if she has high hormone levels i expect shes more prone to mammary tumours. pregnancy in bitches last around 65 days so your vet should be able to feel any babies in the tummy
