Our kitten loves it when we are asleep or even laying down. She purrs and rubs her head on our face until we move. Just wondering if anyone knows the reason why. My guess is that when she was being fed by her mother, her mum used to lay down whilst feeding but just wondering. Many thanks

Cats are Nocturnal animals......

A nocturnal animal is one that sleeps during the day and is active at night - the opposite of the typical human schedule (diurnal) although some humans have been known to be nocturnal .

Our kitten loved it when we were in bed too. Especially if we were under the covers; not lying on top of them. He is 10 months old now and still has an exciteable 20 minutes when the lights go out. His new game is to perch and patrol on the headboard, looking down at our heads then eventually jumping onto us!

It's simply a fun new situation for them! Especially because she is very little. Imagine how tall you must look from her height, even if she's sitting on your lap on the sofa. This is the only situation where she is actually taller than you! It's like "ahhh I have the upper hand! Let's see what we can play!"

She sounds a little sweetie :-)

Good question and I am looking for the same answer. I have a kitten who is about 10 months. When I lay down at night she is constantly in my face. No matter how I lay down or even when I turn my head she is constantly wanting to lay right by face! It is cute but also drives me crazy!

My cat Mia does the same thing! Whenever I lay down she purrs and jumps up and snuggles with me. It makes sense to me that it is like being with her cat mommy, because I am her Mommy now and when she was a kitten the Mother cat would lay down with her babies. So your cat feels like it loving time when you lay down.

My kitten does exactly the same she especially loves my hair. She will nuzzle my hair whilst purring her head off and the she will then try to lay as close to me as she possibly can. She also turns into a demon cat when we go upstairs to bed, its a pleasure when she is purring away and nuzzling lol. I think its her way of showing affection and bonding with me

You should count yourself lucky that she does that. she is just being affectionate and making sure you're still there. She may even tend to go crazy and run around the house during the night, but thats when they're most active. Pretty normal. My kitten does that too. after she spends three hours running around the house crazy while we are trying to sleep.

Your guess is quite correct. A lay down position is a non-threatening position to most animals and this position signals to the kitten that he does not need to be afraid and that he can now approach you and play or nurse or whatever it is he wants to do.

My husband's cat used to curl up under the crook of his neck when he laid down. Now that he's older, as soon as he sits down in a chair, the cat jumps on his lap or chest. It's your kitten's way of showing affection. Also keep in mind cats are nocturnal animals and do most of their hunting at night. So cherich the quiet moments with her laying down next to you.

She probably wants you to pay her some more attention, most babies, be it human or animal, want attention and when they don't get it they find ways of making others give it to them eg baby cries to be picked up and kitties paw when the want to play. Get a cat nip toy on some elastic so when she does it next you can jiggle the toy and she will entertain herself for a few hours!

Some speculate that this is because the brain has a tendency to emit a heightened number of alpha waves while subconscious. This has very little scientific basis; however, I wouldn't be surprised if the cat is aware of them, much like a dog is aware of fear.
