Isn't that just a dog being disgusting and gross?

I wouldn't think of it any other way. I'm sure we project all kinds of emotions on our dogs that they may or may not have. But regardless of the case, a dog licks you because he is taking an interest, wants to be near you, and share with you. If that's not love, I don't know what is!!

Actually, when dogs are puppies, before they're weaned, the mother dog sometimes regurgitates partially digested food for them to eat. The puppies stimulate this behavior by licking at the mother's face and muzzle.

It's also a throw-back to their wolf-cousins: Wolves greet one another by licking each other's faces.

So when your dog licks you, he's both saying "hello" and "feed me".

well it's love, and this may seem a little strange but dogs know when you are feeling sad, happy, mad, stressed, and so on. because sometimes dogs comfort you and lick your face when they want to be loved or you are sad or feeling down, they mite also do it just to be annoying, but mainly because of either what they want or how you are feeling.

No and no (why would a dog think it's gross? They lick their own butts!). It is a sign of deference or submission.

Interesting question. I was told by my dog trainer that it is a pack instinct. Dogs would carry kill/food in their mouths. The litter would accept the food from the parent's mouth. So, actually, according to this theory, your dog is checking to see if you have food in your mouth!!

depends on the situation. my dog will lick my face if i tell her i love her, but she will also do it if i've just scolded her, or have eaten anything. she'll also lick to get my attention or to play with her.

It is just there way of saying hello, how are you, or
I love you as my owner. They don't love you in serious ways, they just love you as a very good friend. I love my dog and you should love yours too!!
