Somebody said crafts aren't something a boy does but they are wrong! My son is 8 too and he loves to do plastic canvas. He doesn't do it really well but he tries and is still learning. I don't know what to suggest for this time but in the future you can try Oriental Trading. They have crafts for very reasonable prices. I recommend them to everyone!! You buy them by the dozen though. If you have other kids it's even better because you get so many. They have wooden cars and planes and such [these are a bit more pricey] that the kids can paint. We do them every Christmas. We also got the coloring stuff and the window decoration things. I can't remember what they are called right now though, sorry.
Get a catalog for next time. Kids are always sick, bored or something! LOL Good luck, I hope he gets better quickly!

They make kits that are pieces of wood you put together and it makes a 3-D animal - they are pretty cool, but might require some parental assistance. My son also liked to color those velvet pictures - you use markers to color the white parts - you can get animals and sports, etc. at Wal Mart and the like. Drawing books with paper are always a big hit, if he likes to draw.

explain how good it can feel to help others less fortunate than him, then let him sort through his clothes/toys for stuff he can't wear/doesn't play with/whatever and donate it to a charity.

decorate a flowerpot and plant some seeds.

make something from clay to give as a gift.

face it, if he's sick, he might not feel like doing too much for the next couple of days

boys seem to have alot of fun making pinewood derby cars (cars from a block of wood) that's usually a 2 to 3 day project

if you can get a huge piece of construction paper and tape it to the side of your garage outside or someplace like that..get some old paints and tell him to paint airplanes, or boats...whatever he likes. or try gluing popsickle sticks to make a mini fort.

make a paper mache model of something he likes. maybe a humongous football or airplane or skateboard. it'll keep him occupied for a week.

Build a birdhouse and/or feeder and then have him paint it -- just in time for spring -- hang it when the weather is warm enough.

'Crafts' just aren't something a boy does. Let him build with Legos or play with his cars.
