Just the opposite - a tapeworm will MAKE you lose weight, because it's taking all of the nutrition that you take in. You would be ravenous, eating all the time and still losing weight.
Unless you have been eating raw fish or handling animal feces and not washing your hands, tapeworms are not all that common in humans in developed countries these days.

Tape worms make you loose weight. They take a lot of the food you eat, so you are always hungry and always eating, but still loosing weight. Today, it's not that common to get a tape worm. My history teacher got one from eating a popcorn thing from south america, and he said that he was really sick, and finally (this is kinda gross!!) he felt like there was something in his throat that he couldn't clear, so he went to the doctor. They told him to fast for a few days, and then boil some milk on the stove and lean over it. The smell of the milk will make the tape worms come up and you can pull them out. These days, there are medications for them, that will kill them and then the come out the other end. I know.. gross, but true. Anyways, the likely hood of someone having tape worms is so low that it isn't even thought of now when you go in for problems. If you think you have one, tell the doctor that what you think. They will do tests to see if that's what it is.

Tape worms are officially called Trichuris trichiura. A slight infection can be asymptomatic. Massive infections can cause bloody or mucoid diarrhea, weight loss, weakness, and abdominal pain.
