Because, way back when, when we were pissed off at the Brits (think pre- and post-Revolutionary War), we changed a bunch of our words and spelled them differently than their original British spelling because one or two letters made ALL the difference. Honour became honor. We dropped a bunch of unnecessary "u"s and switched the "r" and the "e," like center used to be centre before we changed it. Same with Brazil and Brasil.

The "Academia Brasileira de Letras" has decided that it should be spelt with 's' somewhere in the early 1900, but this only had effect in Portuguese. English has retained the older spelling.
