i've used amitriptyline for headaches and it worked really well. It is an antidepresent but doctors tend to use it more now for muscle and nerve pain.

Would you rather fix the problem rather than mask it?
Chiropractor to make sure mis-alignment is not contributing to the problem - Massage therapist to get rid of the knots - use the principles in the book at the bottom
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).
For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Isn't it amazing how the same drug is given for different ailments etc.... I was prescribed this as a relaxant. I was stuggling to sleep at night after id had a break in and was on edge. The dr told me it would help relax me. I have never become addicted to them, just take 10mg at night as when and if I feel i need to. Ie. if i am on edge etc. Good luck :-)

I'm taking this in low doses for tension headaches, I noticed a difference within a few days, but was told I could have to take them for around Six months to completely cure the muscle tension that is causing the headaches.

Your dosage is quite low. It will help your muscles relax when you are sleeping. It can be prescribed for sleeping and depressant disorders, but that is 150/200mg. Don't worry :) Usually it kicks in within 24 hours. Can see where your doctor is coming from, but surprised he proscribed this drug.

No. I have one of those little fancy shmancy boxes that parses out the daily doses. If Thursday's is gone, that means I've already taken it. Now all I have to do is remember what day it is.

Old fashioned, like me. I still use it as well. It might work in 2 ways. Firstly it is a muscle relaxant, secondly it acts as an atypical analgesic. (pain killer).
Younger doctors might not be so eager to use it though.
