True Story: Guy I knew who led Campus Crusade for Christ at my University - felt called to the ministry. He was torn between going to the more liberal seminary near his home in Missouri, which would be paid for by his home church. Or the more conservative Denver Theological Seminary. No matter how hard he prayed, he couldn't see God's will! So, he told me, he did what Gideon did with the fleece. Only Bill was in front of McDonalds and had a quarter instead of a fleece ("Its the same biblical principle!" Bill told me.) He flipped it 4 times. 4 times it was heads which meant...Denver.

Somehow Bill ended up in Missouri tho.

The fleece was Gideon's idea. Not as a means of communication, but to prove it had been God who had spoken to him.

I'm not familiar with this story, I'm happy to say. That makes it so much more fun to speculate!

Let's see, how did he use a fleece....

Shadow puppets projected onto it?
Semaphore?
Gideon held it up to his ear and .... no, never mind.
Morse code by flapping it?

Wait! I know the answer. "God works in mysterious, fleecy ways."
