The 1st time I got shingles I was 44 and it started on the inside of my knee and spread from there. When it was full blown it was from ankle to mid thigh. It was the most painfull thing I've ever experienced. I had to go to the ER and was given morphine and it didn't help. I took elavil for months afterwards. It is a deep nerve pain. They say stress has alot to do with getting it.

I don't mean to scare but shingles in older people could be due to a malignant condition. not always. in certain conditions, immune function deteriorates because the cells responsible for generating antibodies become altered, transformed, cancerous, so if a person has been exposed to chicken pox causing herpes when young and when they are older they get shingles, then the antibodies keeping the herpes in check could be gone.
or and probably more likely, shingles can be caused if someone was never exposed to chicken pox when young. and it is a fact that as a person gets old immune function declines, so they are more susceptible to infections.

I got them when I was 18...i got it on my side...it started out as a little rash then grew to be VERY painful...it hurt all around the rash...probably like on the whole left side of my stomach. Its a recurrance of the chicken pox so if someone hasnt had chicken pox before they can get it if they come in contact with shingles.
