I have been diagnosed with severe clinical depression and right now I am okay. Twice in my life though my illness got so bad i was unable to function for 6 months to a year. I have been working 10 months full time at my current job and plan to keep doing that. During my two periods of unemployment due to emergency room visits for confusion and once again diagnosed with severe clinical depression and a chemical inbalance. I was recently told that i could have applied for disability and received money for the months I was not working. Is this true? I tried to look it up on the internet but want to prepare incase it happens again. I go to one of the best doctors in the US and plan to not get get again because I cannot afford to get sick and not work however it may happen because the average person with my disease has 5-6 episodes in a lifetime whereas I have had 2 thus far which left me an invalid until they could alter my medication to make me better.

You can apply for social security disability based on mental illness. The process can be lengthy and difficult, and you may have to have a hearing in which you must prove that your illness does interfere with work and daily functioning. With your past experiences, that shouldn't be a problem. Depending on where you are, though, you might not be eligible for benefits if they determine that the time you *have* been employed is some kind of proof to the contrary. Like I said, the process isn't easy...The amount of money you're eligible for is based on your living expenses and any dependents (children) you may have.

This is what you need to do if this happens again. Go apply for S.S.I. and disability at the Social Security Office. You getting money from them will take a long time so you get a letter from them saying you applied. Then go to the Human Service department and ask them for a form for your doctor to fill out stating you are unable to work . Have your doctor fill it out and make a copy of the letter the Social Security gave you and take both these documents back to Social Services. With this they will help you till the S.S.I. comes in and give you Medicaid as well. Good luck!

I am on disability for that reason. At the same time when I got the disability I had had several hospitalizations and it also took me 3 years of appeals to get the disability. On the other hand I also got 3 years of back pay which was really nice.

To get disability (at least in the US), you have to have tried everything pretty much. They might want you to try therapy first, but if your psychiatrist writes a 'good' letter, then you might be able to get it. I will say from knowledge of people who have depression and withdrew from life (school, work, friends) that staying at home does not help.
