I think it means that whoever wrote that is overreaching his vocabulary.

I heard someone talking on the radio about traffic who said "that was just an 'extortionate' amount of cars to transit such a small road".

convenient maybe? since hedonism is related to something that gives pleasure...what can be more pleasurable that a good bargain?
