pre supposing your issues are not tune up related [the very first thing to check] on 7- series gasoline vehicles: some had a cold start injector that would fail [there was a bulletin for this years ago] most cars were modified at dealerships but still see a couple now and then even still that need the procedure done. a scan of the on-board diagnostics is in order at this time use the Robert Bentley manual because it is more thorough than most others, .your car has the ability to retrieve codes and test individual components without expensive diagnostic tools. NOTE: a failing battery may spin your engine over pretty good but if the voltage available falls below approximately 10 volts [test this outside in cold with a voltmeter across the battery terminals while someone cranks the car over] the fuel and ignition systems will shut down. as you indicate you live above the frost belt this could very well be what is happening Note#2 : if all the above checks out try replacing the [RADIO SUPPRESSION RELAY] on right inner fender -- this supplies battery voltage to the fuel injectors. good luck i hope these tips help resolve your problems.

This sounds like a cold start injector problem. The cold start injector does the same thing as a choke on carburetor-equipped engines. The circuit should be checked by a qualified mechanic, not necessarily a Volvo dealer but someone who is experienced with these cars. The injector could be clogged or the electrical circuit could be at fault.

Most 74gle volvos are fuel injected if petrol had one do the same thing whilst i was working at volvo one possible cause is the coolant temp sensor which is not allowing the cold start injector to work and when the vehicle is started and warm it will run and start just as it should

hope this helps

Moisture in the fuel line might cause the starting problem.. There are solvents available which clear moisture in the fuel line..

is it gas or diesel, if it is diesel then i would say bad glow plugs, if it is gas then it could be your choke, or a clogged air filter.
