A traditional time -out is a much better technique to use, particularly with young children. Holding your arms straight out is nothing more than an empty punishment. In fact, it sounds somewhat like a form of torture. It teaches your child nothing. If you use a time-out in the way it is supposed to be used, it becomes a very effective tool. I will now mention that many view time-out as a "punishment". In some ways it is, but it was origionally developed as a way of teaching a child self-control. The purpose of it is to remove the child from a situation that is causing her or him self to misbehave and it allows the child a few minutes to cool off before being allowed to play again. Children who were taught with time-outs in the correct manner show better self control. The length of the child's time-out is one minute for every year of their age. When you seperate the child from the activity, get down on their eye level and tell them what they did that was wrong, how it made the other people feel, and tell them to think while they are sitting down about what they could have done instead in that situation.

firstly...you try to stand there with your arms out for 3 minutes..right now..
not very easy is it???..
why would you expect a child of 3 to be able to do that?..even 2 minutes is ridiculous..
I think positive reinforcement is a much better way to help a child learn what behaviour is needed. I also am a big believer that people with children, looking after children etc..should have a basic course on child development to understand themselves first, what a child can and can understand, or physically and mentally be able to do at what age. So many people become so frustrated because they are expecting a child to behave or be able to do something at a certain age..when the child is not develop ready o do or understand the behaviour yet.
A huge pet peeve of mine is to see so many ppl right away resort to punishing the child for not understanding!

Some others would be sitting in a chair for one minute for every year of age (8 years = 8 minutes). Also, standing in a corner, sitting on a "naughty" bench or mat, not being able to participate in the activity, and also taking away privileges (like TV, play time, toys, etc)

What does that teach them? You want them to learn that what they are doing is wrong cuz they hurt someones feelings or broke something not cuz the adult says so. That doesn't help them later when there isn't an adult around and they have to make a decision on how to behave.
