If the very nature of one's public service job regularly presents situations of spiritual conflict, shouldn't the person just find another job, instead of inconveniencing the public?

Example 1 - Muslim cabbies at an airport refusing to transport people who may have just returned home with a bottle of imported liquor.

Example 2 - Pharmacists with personal issues regarding contraceptives?

If they can't deal with it, they should find a new job.

It's strange that while some pundits object to Christians saying 'Merry Christmas', these same people find it fit to recognize the religious rights of Muslim Cabbies.
I fully agree with the separation of Church and state for any reason; if pharmacist refuse to handle contraceptives, he doesn't belong at that job.

I think most people try to separate their beliefs from their jobs.
However, there are some jobs a Christian couldn't do. If you can follow your conscience it would be much better for you. That kind of conflict is hard on a person day after day.
I quit a job at 19 working for a "charity" group that I found was actually cheating the poor they pretended to be aiding..Ick!
Something I couldn't afford to do (financially) but I had to do
morally!

better yet.... why is it that islamies regularly get special treatment by employers who cow-tow to their "religion". they get days off for their "religion" they get to stop and "pray"... and as you cite, get to refuse to do the job... the cabby got upheld... but the Pharmacists who are Christian got shot down... and Christians routinely do not get time off for their "religion" and can not even think about praying or they will get fired... many places will not even hire a Christian if they know they are... and if the Christian says they can not work on Sunday...even just Sunday morning... they will not even be hired.... but an employer can be fined and even imprisoned if they do not allow an Islam to freely do whatever he wants.... and this is America? land of the free?... not any more... the God the Federal authorities bow to is now islam...

If they are that committed to their beliefs then they should find another job. I don't think it's a matter of inconveniencing the public as much as it's unnecessary to work in a job that is so contrary to your beliefs.

Well, a LOT DEPENDS on if they are techically classified as EMPLOYEES or INDEPENDENT SUB CONTRACTORS OR CONTRACTORS.

Employees MUST follow the rules of their employer, as such people with BOOZE can THEN SUE the company for inconvience.

CONTRACTORS can do as they like.

An idependent contractor doesn't HAVE to fix your house, if he looks at it and doesn't want to, he can DECLINE.

AND EMPLOYEE MUST, if that is their job.

As for handling the situation, there is always the BOYCOTT RULE OF THUMB.

Let JUST the MUsLIMS take the MUSLIMS

If they're aren't enough Muslims to take, let them die in poverty and dispair...

Get the point.

People should learn to separate their personal lives from their professional lives. However if what they do for a living conflicts with their spiritual convictions, then yes, they should consider another line of work.

Well, muslims can drive a drunk person home i think but they cant run a liquor store. Some conservative Jews cant work on Saturday. And yeah the pharmacist thing. Some sikhs cant cut their hair so i doubt one would run a barber shop.

With somewhat more than 15,000 different kinds of careers available to people, I really don't see why they make a stink.

I say, "Leave the job as soon as you can find one which will NOT conflict with your beliefs. And LOOK for that bloody job!"

If you're self employed, sure go ahead and refuse to provide to others based on religous reasons.

If you work for someone else, then no you should accept the standard of that business.

I think that would depend on a person's convictions regarding that specific issue.

Personally, I've been confronted with that very same question many times.... To work on Sunday, or not to work on sunday....

In actual fact, what I mean is: To work on sunday (compulsary) or to lose my job...
