I have a bible that is completely falling apart, to the point where I doubt even the poor would want to use it. Is there a way to retire it respectfully?
Only sincere answers, please.

If you have a secure place you can do it I would suggest burning it... if you have a shredder you can shred it and then burn so it would burn easier. Ort just tear out the pages to make it burn better. Just dumping it in the trash has always seemed disrespectful... we are to burn The Flag so why not give the same respect to The Bible.

Save that old bad boy you have there. Why retire anything that can give glory to God. If its that battered and torn it may have many souls saved with it. Perhaps it was your first Bible pass it on. I dont care if its in some sad condition. You have history with that Bible. Why am I so sensitive about the Bible? The Bible is alive and can find someone at anytime. You may move and leave that Bible by accident in your basement. Some new people move in they are having problems they pick it up and say lets give this thing a chance a lot of people do an voila a saved soul. Amen and Peace out....................

Just put it on a shelf and leave it there, and replace it with a new one. You might be able to tape the pages together to salvage this one somewhat as well. However, I do think it is time for you to get a new one. It's ok, God won't smite you for buying a new Bible because you have used your old one so much that it is falling apart. If anything, He probably will commend you for it.

Take it to a Book Binder and see what they can do to rescue the Book. This way, so long as the pages are intact, the Sacred book may get a new lease on life, and you might get a pretty neat looking Old-New Bible

Just put it away on a shelf somewhere like I did to mine and get another one.
May I suggest The New American Standard Bible, Giant print addition
By Foundation Publications.

Burning it is perfectly ok.... and actually throwing it away is ok too in the city where we live they incinerate the trash so it is burned. If you say a prayer there is nothing wrong with that. God would not be offended with that I don't think. The bible itself is a tool. And parchments of old deteriorated back in the day too and I am sure were thrown away too and nothing too bad happened. Its what is in your heart, not written on a piece of paper that counts. :)

I was given my gradmother's Bible after she died. It's in terrible condition so I keep it in a very safe place where it will not get worse. When I can I intend to have it rebound. If it has sentimental value for you that may be the best thing to do.

Laurel,
I have one that is very special to me and I am rebinding it. It is a little expensive but I believe it will be worth the trouble. I would give it to someone that is special to me or a family member if I wanted to do so. Have a great weekend!

I've heard of people burying them, and burning them. If done in the right spirit of things, I see no harm in either method. However, I would probably want to just keep it in a box, or scripture tote or something, and keep it in the top of my closet.

Wow, people are mean.

Anyway, according to the church you are supposed to bury it 6 feet underground, like you would do to any of God's works. Your parish priest can take care of it for you, or he may just store it.
