What makes someone a top contributor?

I don't know but it makes me stand out and I don't like it.

I don't know. I found your question looking to find the answer to it myself. I click on people's profiles who have that label and compare them to mine and they don't have a higher percentage of best answers, they are not at a higher level than I'm at, and I'm very active in this category so it couldn't have to do with that either. If you find out, let me know.
edit - A Top Contributor is an Answerer who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. You can be a top contributor in up to three categories. The better a user’s contributions are in any respective category, the more likely that user will become a Top Contributor for that category.
Basically, we take an Answerer's overall contributions to Answers in each individual category, toss them into a hamster wheel, and the ones that manage to stay on the wheel become Top Contributers.

contributing all their time of day and night answering and asking questions and reaching a certain amt of points on the same ol category....but ask yourself on thing, are they really contributing anything at all? oooooo, that was deep....lol

in fact i don't know for sure , but iam unlike most of the answers u have , i don't spend day and night answering , though i don't know why i got it?!!
i think may be , because it is the main category i contriute in!!!
