My mom had a biopsy on her breast done last week, and her results came back as irregular. Her doctor wants says that it is the beginning of cancer, but not cancer yet. He wants to remove both of her breasts as soon as possible. The irregualrities are not in one concentrated place in her breast, but in a couple of places. What advice does anyone have? We have Kaiser Permanente insurance, and are not sure if this is an extreme solution to maintain the cost of other treatments. Does anyone have any helpful advice?

SEEK A SECOND OPINION!!! ASAP!. I had a pap smear that came back irregular. My doctor said that I had pre-cancer but not cancer. He wanted to do an emergency hysterectomy but I am only 24 so I went and got a 2nd opinion from another doctor. He gave me much better options and less traumatic treatment options. I am so glad I went to seek another opinion. Its your mothers body and she really needs to get all the treament options she can before they try something tramatic like that.

SEEK A SECOND OPINION!!! A double mastectomy is absolutely not her only option. First, the cells were irregular, and he said they are the "beginning of cancer." If that is the case, there are far more options available (lumpectomy, chemo, radiation, etc.) Mutilating your mother is not something to take lightly or on first look. Have your mother go to another doctor (oncologist) and repeat the test (probably a biopsy with fine needle aspiration). If another oncologist has the same opinion, then consider the double mastectomy. Kaiser Permanente is accepted in many cities. If you are limited in your area, drive to another area for another consultation. Do not let this guy remove your mother's breasts without seeking another opinion. Good luck.

Make sure she understands the risks. There is a range of cell irregularities that can cause a slightly increased risk to imminent risk. She needs to know what the risk is. A critical question is what are the qualifications of the pathologist who made the diagnosis. A review by an expert breast pathologist might be in order. Talk to an oncologist. If the answers are not satisfying, get a second opinion.

That is a very drastic measure, and she certainly needs to have an outside opinion. She may need to pay to have someone outside of Kaiser see her, but it will be worth it.

She can also request that another pathologist review the slides, as the interpretation of the biopsy results might be questionable as well.

This is the time to do as much research as you can and go to the doctor prepared with questions about risks, alternatives to surgery, and any other questions that you come up with. You might want to go with her - it usually helps to have a second set of ears in the room. Patients can be overwhelmed, especially when cancer is the topic of conversation. Don't be afraid to jot down notes so that you can remember what was said.

Good luck to you and your Mom.

Seek a second opinion, then if the other doctors agree with the first one, your mom needs to do some heavy duty thinking about what she wants to do. She should maybe find a support group where she could find out the experiences of others who have had to make the same decisions. What ever she decides, she is going to need alot of support from friends and family. Good Luck

I had a breast biospy that showed irregular cells called atypical hyperplasia ductual. It means my cells are enlarged and I'm high risk for getting breast cancer. My Dr. put me on Tamoxifen for five years, that is suppose to help prevent cancer.

Make sure she gets a second, maybe third opinion from other doctors. They might have new technology or ways of going about it without having to cut them off. All doctors are different and have different ways of doing things...make sure that she finds a doctor that fits her needs and wants as well as what needs to be done.

First, be sure that she gets a second opinion. The decision has to be hers. The BEST thing you can do for your mother, whatever she decides, is to be supportive of her. She will need more help, particularly if she is to undergo chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
