Is there a right and wrong way to put this on? I seem to have mildew under the caulk after applying it.

The intended area to be caulked should be sprayed with bleach and allowed to set for 5 to 10 minutes to kill the bacteria, (and mold spores). Then rinsed and allowed to dry thoroughly before applying your caulk.
Then too, you might want to use a product that has "mold and mildew" retardents in it as an added precaution.

Use an exacto knife to take off the old. Vacuum the area well. Make sure there is no pieces left that was already infected with mildew. You might take a Whisk broom or a painters brush and brush out the crack. ** Make sure the Silicone Caulk is usable on the surface you need before you apply it.
Some are made for porcelain tubs, Tile surfaces, Marble and Glass just to name a few. If you are using it near fiber-glass showers you might have this issue repeated.

1). Cut the tip tiny
2). Use your finger to "smooth" it into the crack
3). Use a wet paper towel to clean up the edges.
4). Let it dry over night or at least 24 hours before you use it.
5). Reapply if you see cracks or holes.

Good Luck!

First make sure to clean the surface before caulking it. A little bleach and scrubbing pad might help. Then allow the surface to dry.

You may also want to use an antimicrobial caulking to prevent mold. Ask your local hardware store about it. It will help keep mold from forming on your caulking.

You need to be sure to treat the area for mold in advance, then let it stay dry for at least one full day. Put down a bead of the caulk and then press and seal it (wet finger, some come with tools) so that moisture can't get into the cracks and underneath. Most packaging has directions for proper use.
