Anyone have any advise on what i should do once my female puppy goes in heat. I have a male maltese and a female yorkie - both are 5 months old right now. SO I expect (from what I understand) my female should go into heat when she is around 6 months old. I WOULD LOVE for them to mate (and have morkie pups) at least once but dont I have to wait until she is about 2 years old? SO my question is WHAT do I do until then? How do I keep her from getting pregnant? Do i have to find someones house to keep my male at while she is in heat? AND how do I know when she is coming into heat? Is there a warning sign? I have no clue as to any of this, can someone help?

You will know she is in heat when you see a spot or two of blood on the floor.. prior to this she will be cleaning herself *a lot* and so will he.... lol

Crate the male so he is not marking everything in the house.. Maltese are *very* good at that... trust me = I know.

Get the little doggie kotex holders or buy the pretty little period panties they have out.. they use the feminine panty liners and are great.

She should be safe from him if you are around and she has the liners on.. not to worry until around day 10 of her season anyway.

GOOD LUCK

First off, don't breed them. There's to many dogs out there without homes, because someone that 2 dogs breeding, would make cute puppies. Get them fixed, and give the homeless dogs a chance at life, not death.

And second, No, you don't have t wait until your dog is 2 yrs old. My dog had her first litter when she was under a year. I had a different breed then you do, but as far as I know, there's no waiting limit. There could be for that breed of dog, or maybe small dogs. But dogs in general don't need to wait that long.

Waring signs could be your male sniffing the air alot, digging, whining, mounting things like a large stuffed animal, or the female. The female could be walking around like she's showing her @ss, putting her rear towards the male, keeping her tail up to expose her rear, whining alot, trying to rub her butt on the floor, sort of like when a dog has worms, and as strange as it sounds, she may start to mount things too.

If you do have to wait 2 yrs, then keep them seperated at nite, take them outside seperately, when they play, make sure that they don't start to get to close to each other. The only thing that you can do is keep them apart. Try some medium sized crates, or perhaps seperate bedrooms. And why isn't this something that you thought about when you firt bought the dogs?? Beind a resposible pet owner is knowing all the facts before you get the breed, and knowing what to do in simple situations, and knowing that fixing a dog is one of the healthiest things you can do for them. It prevents cancers, ulcers, and can increase their life span.

~EDIT~
I didn't steal this answer I swear! lol. It takes me a few minutes to type, but I totally agree with the above answer!!!

First of all you will notice some swelling of the female's private parts and the male will be smelling of her a lot. That will be your first clue that she is coming in heat, his sniffing around her backside all the time. Most females do not come in heat until they are around a year old, now some may come in heat earlier and some later, but as a general rule, they are usually about a year old and will come in heat every 6 months. She will bleed for about a week, so you may want to purchase some of those "doggie diapers" so she won't mess up your carpets and stuff. Those little panties will also help keep the male from breeding her. The only problem will be to get her to keep the "panties" on. I would start now, getting her used to wearing them so when the time comes, she will be okay. I would also purchase a large pet carrying case to put her in when you are not there. Watch her closely for about three weeks. It usually takes about that long for a dog to fully get out of heat. Good Luck.

Life is much simpler if at least one of tha cross sex houshold is "fixed". Now do you know how to tell if a female is in heat? Her vulva will swell and there will be a bloody discharge (may be only a few drops). The chances of a mating with the female not in heat (and it happens every 6 months or so) is zero (though domainance mounts can happen any time). I assure you, both will make major efforts to get togher if she is in heat (and whine, howl and generally be a pain)

One suggestion is to have a crate that u can keep one of them in or diapers for her from ur local pet store will keep him from being able to get to her and also keep her from making a mess all over ur house too. A heat will usually last up to 2 weeks . It is amazing breeding but do it for the right reasons dont ever breed for money it won't happen i have had 4 litters and its hard when u loose a puppy and its also very expensive especially if you run into the problem of a c-section which just cost me 1500 dollars and she lost both pups it was so sad but she is fine and that was my only concern. I have only ever bred my dog for the love of the breed i have shelties and they are amazing loving dogs. Have fun

THOSE DIAPERS DO NOT PREVENT THE DOGS FROM MOUNTING!!!! If a dog will jump a fence, chew through his crate etc. to get to a female what makes you think he will not get through those. Fix your dog because you have no clue what you are doing.

Good breeders normaly do vaginal smears to learn when there dog is in heat and when she is breedable. This is how you will learn if you dog comes into heat.

Being a small breed, I would save my money for a C-Sections because birthing yorkies will be a b i t c h. Also save your money to get her health tests done.

Your dogs need to be fixed. Unless these are show dogs, they should NEVER be bred. Not even just once so that "friends can have puppies". It's a violation of EVERY ethics standard to breed two non-standard pet quality dogs - much less of two separate breeds.

I can tell that you care about your dogs, but the only way to do this completely is to get them fixed next month. You aren't experienced enough to be a breeder and they probably aren't breeding quality. Reduce the chances of unwanted pregnancies, numerous cancers and health ailments, and many behavioural problems by getting them fixed.

You may want to find a place for your male to stay while she is in heat. Dogs on a mission can literally get through anything! And staying in the crate for him will not be fair. Definitely find somewhere for him to go. Hope this helps!!

for now u can crate them. like off and on. but i dont think that u will have to wait till there 2. cuz my pit got to my nieghbors rotti when the rotti was like 1 yr. and it went fine. she had 12 pups. and the 2nd time my pit got to her she had 10 pups. then thte third time she had puppies in her but she had a doggy abortion and then got fixed at the same time. so i dont think that u will have to wait that long.

Get both of them fixed. Unless you're a certified breeder you shouldn't be mating your dogs. There are thousands of dogs that need good homes and hundreds that are being put to sleep a day.

You sound like you're a responsible dog owner so you need to get your dogs fixed. You're asking questions here that a certified breeder would know - and since you don't please... spay/neuter your dogs

the cheapest way for you to make sure she wouldn't get pregnant .. is to Neutre the male.. because it's cheaper than spaying the female...

Do either one or both =)

But the male's surgery is cheaper than the females..

Good Luck ..!
